What makes Huntington an excellent partner?
Here at Huntington our main business is sales of quality horses. We do welcome youngsters into the barn, however it usually takes longer to sell a young untrained horse. Most of our sale horses are made hunters and jumpers of various levels we also have sold many dressage, event and hunt horses. The average sound, proven show horse sells within 30 - 90 days.Huntington has been successfully selling horses at this location for 11 years and offers a consignment service for clients who do not wish to handle the sale of their horses on their own. We offer a safe, professional environment for potential buyers to come try our horses. We take care of all of the preparation required to present your horse in a way that shows off his best attributes. More often than not, potential buyers choose our horses over others in the local area due to the quality of our horses and our presentation. We always get rave reviews on how impressive our service is. Here is a list that makes your horse more attractive to a potential buyer:
What are success factors to sell a horse?
Soundness is key! Our job is to get your horse to a pre-purchase exam...The more vet records and information you can provide, the better. Current radiographs are best. Even if your horse requires maintenance, if it is disclosed from the start the buyer can decide if it is acceptable before they even try the horse. There is NOTHING worse than putting a ton of work into a horse, finding a buyer (who is already emotionally attached), to be crushed in the end from an unacceptable vetting. The end result is a lot of wasted time, unhappy clients and money wasted on vettings, board/training etc. So even though your horse has "never" taken a lame step, if your radiographs are more than 1 year old. we Highly suggest spending the money on a current set it may save you thousands of dollars in boarding and training fees required for getting your horse ready to be sold. We often have repeat buyers and they sometimes will forgo a full vetting if current radiographs are available. We've had clients show up with a trailer and write a check for a horse with current information! Those are our favorite kind of sales. How can Huntington boost success?
Some of the horses that come to us have minor issues that are easy to fix. Theses issues usually surface if a horse has not been worked regularly and suddenly has to be "tuned up" or prepped for sale. Our horses can be worked up to 5 days/week if they require it to get ready to be on the market. Gina is excellent at quickly finding problem areas that need some attention, ie. injections, or other medical care. Together with our extremely capable vets, horses are usually back in work immediately and feel great, therefore present at their best.It is of the utmost importance that sale horses are presentable 24/7! That means they have to be beautiful, fit, up to date with required vet records and always be on schedule with shoeing.
Our farrier (Lee Griffin) has been known to come out at a moments notice to replace a lost shoe.
Why is a show record important?
For more experienced horses and baby green's, the longer the show record, the better. Clients love it when we present them with a nice thick file proving this horse has the experience they are looking for. Even records from clinics are great too. This helps a non horse person (You know who you are!) justify paying good money for a horse. Keep good records!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Does Huntington help me determine an appropriate price range?
Here at Huntington our main objective is to get you horse sold. Gina likes to discuss the price range you are expecting, then take a week to evaluate your horse. After this evaluation period she will discuss with you where the horse should be priced according to several variables. The current horse market, your horses abilities, temperament, age, quality of breeding, level of training, discipline and show record. Again horses with a long show record always sell faster and are more likely to produce the asking price.Does age matter?
Age of horse: This can be a real factor in how much a horse will be worth. Of course everyone wants the 7 y.o. horse with a great show record who is 100% sound (LOL) perfectly mannered no prep etc... for as little money as possible. The reality is, All horses have a potential to be matched up with the perfect buyer. We sell horses in all age ranges. It all goes back to, and yes you knew it was coming, what experience has the horse had? For example. Say you have the most beautiful 6 or 7y.o. gelding with super bloodlines, who is a 10 mover/jumper, but barely broke and has never been off the farm. Then there is this really nice quiet 4 y.o. with similar breeding and movement, jumps great and has been to 10 horse shows and is competitive and consistently in the ribbons. Same price. Most *trainers will pick the more experienced horse even though it is younger. So if you have a really nice horse and it has been "sitting" around for a year or two, it might hold less value than you had hoped. We can always increase your horses value by going to horse shows but you have to be willing to invest more money into your horse. What is the influence of a trainer?
Trainers usually have the most influence over our potential buyers. Occasionally we will have clients come up on their own, but we always ask who their trainer is, if they are involved or not in their purchase. We actually prefer working with a client who has a trainer to make sure our horses get matched up with the right kind of rider. We don't want our horses to get a "bad rap" because he fell into the wrong hands. Even though this can happen with trainers too, it is more often than not, that the professional knows what the client needs better than the client. This brings us to commissions...How does Huntington calculate commission?
Within every sale there is the subject of commissions. Here at Huntington, we do it 2 ways. You choose, either we take a percentage of 15% of the final sale , or after the evaluation, you decide on the amount you want. and we add our commission on top. Sometimes we have to include another trainer and this is what gets added to the final price as well. Most clients and trainers already have a percentage already worked out and then pay them separately, some don't.What does a sales contract with Huntington cover?
If we agree to represent you horse for sale, you are responsible for paying all of your horses expenses including but not limited to, board, training (if needed), shoes and vet bills. The horse board is $1000/month. Please note we do not take horses "on the cuff" or (for free). What you can expect is this. Horses stay ridden and trained as needed. We do all of the preparation for showings. We handle the entire sales process. Your horse will be posted on the Huntington website with regularly updated pics and video's. We keep several banner ads on various horse sales websites which links directly to the Huntington site. (All outside marketing costs are to be paid by the owner) If an owner wishes to advertise also elsewhere we ask that you refer clients directly to Huntington with our contact details. (This avoids confusion and misquoted prices). Download our standard sales contract here. How long will it take to sell my horse?
There is no way to determine how fast a horse will sell. This business is very seasonal, so normally sales go as follows. Late spring to early Fall sales are usually consistent. As soon as kids are back in school sales decrease a little. Winter, we take the time to prepare "young talent" and "rehabs" so they are ready for the spring. (Rehabs are horses who have issues that need to be worked out or simply horses who are not fit that need to be brought back slowly) Rarely do we have perfectly made show horses in the barn in the winter. These horses are showing on the winter circuit and are available to be seen at horse shows, or already sold. We do have active clients all year round so if a made horse comes in during the winter we know who needs them. We understand about the rising costs keeping and showing horses and know not everyone can afford to campaign their horses all of the time.Does Huntington cooperate with other professionals?
Huntington keeps very close contact with professionals around the country. If you have a nice show horse for sale and don't want to flip the bill, we have farms particularly in Florida who are always looking for suitable mounts for excellent riders who can't afford horses. This way your horse stays for sale, gets his show bill paid, gains experience and adds to his show record. This has been a very lucrative option for many Huntington clients. Although we do advertise and acquire new contacts everyday, Huntington has been able to maintain great relationships with clients and trainers over the years and relies mostly on "word of mouth" and repeat business. We have had clients all over the world including Puerto Rico, Germany, Bermuda and Canada. It is very often that we will handle the sale of the same horse 2 or 3 times as riders advance and "move up". We love to keep track of our horses. It is also very common to go to a horse show and have handled the sale of every horse in the ring at that time. One of the things our clients value most is that we've been in the same location providing great service for a very long time.
